Both use 4aa batteries. Although neither retailer promote the use of rechargeable batteries both tablets work fine with them, and this is likely to be a less high-priced option as both can eat up battery power quickly. You could use an Ac adaptor with both, although neither currently has a recharging pack available.

Both allow you to buy the same app for separate consoles (great if you have complicated tablets in the house). Although LeapFrog limit their use to two consoles.

What are their differences?

The LeapPad has a built-in camera, the InnoTab does not. Whilst you can associate it to your Vtech Kidizoom cameras if you do not already have these it is extra cost and other item lying colse to the house. The lack of a built in camera is a real let down for the InnoTab.

However to make up for the lack of camera the InnoTab has two major features which the LeapPad lacks. The InnoTab can play Mp3s and downloaded movies (transferred to your computer to the InnoTab from customary Dvds). Both features require the use of an Sd card which again is an further purchase, but these are reasonably cheap now. The InnoTab would therefore be great for in the car, no extra Dvd player needed. The LeapPad will only play the downloaded app ‘movies’ which are cartoon based educational titles.

The LeapPad is more unquestionably customisable according to your childs’ age. This is a great highlight for multi sibling households, or just to adjust to your childs’ level.

Whilst this will be covered in more depth in the next paragraph it’s worth noting that the LeapPad currently has a much wider app and software range. The built in apps differ. InnoTab has an address book, calendar, notebook, calculator, apps lacking on the LeapPad. Both have drawing programmes (although the LeapPad doesn’t have an already built in colouring app, you would need to buy the Mr Pencil game for this).

What software is available?

The LeapPad has a large software library ready consisting of game cartridges and apps (e-books, videos, action apps, flash cards, games and more).

The InnoTab library is small but growing.

By and large the software ready is very similar. Both tablets have character software ready for buy based on kids’ favourites such as Disney Princesses, Dora the Explorer, Spongebob Squarepants, Penguins of Madagascar, Cars and Scooby Doo.

What is a Mixer?

A mixer, mixing console, mixing board or desk is a gadget that allows you to balance, position, follow and equalize various different audio channels into one sonic image – a mix. The first gig we played, we found on setting up that the house mixer didn’t work at all ie – no Pa. We naturally plugged in our trusty beast and left it to our own sound engineer to sort out. At other gigs it’s proven a good desk than the resident one or it’s mixed our stage sound for us. So, you’re seeing at the desk, a bewildering array of knobs and sliders with strange, alien names. Sound engineers excel at creating new names for otherwise well-known things and concepts – our sound engineer once stared blankly and uncomprehendingly at a query I raised about ‘output leads’ and after any minutes of this said cuttingly – “You mean ‘feeds’. A channel is an audio input that goes to a fader. A channel usually has sends which send part of the signal to an Fx (effects) unit (or other destination). Finally a channel may have a bus selector switch which switches the channel output to a bus.

… What is a Fader?

A fader is a sliding level operate that can be used to vary the loudness of any mixer channel. The name comes from “fading in” and “fading out” tracks. External Fx processing for example – sending the signal for effects to be applied by an external unit then returning the processed signal so it can be sent on to a pa or other destination. On mixers with buses, there are routing buttonson each channel that lets you route the whole signal to one of the buses. The main busis often called the ‘L/R bus’. Other buses are often grouped in pairs, like the 1-2 bus and 3-4 bus. There may also be an additional one switch that lets you route these bus fadersto the ‘master fader’. Typical uses of buses are to send a track (or groups of tracks) to a digital multi-track, or to a sound card or audio interface. Yet you can also be very creative with them, sending them to samplers, groove-boxes with analog inputs, surround encoders, isolate compressors etc. Some buses may have channel inserts.

… Channel Inserts?

An insert is a pathway out and then back again into a single fader, letting you return the external signal to the mixer without using more channels. Use an insert to patch in an external piece of gear that only affects that one channel. Typical uses of inserts are patching compressors, outboard Eqs, exciters, pedals, multi-track recorder input/outputs, and Fx boxes. Lots of citizen route channel inserts to a patch-bay where they can plug in various devices conveniently. A well-featured mixer will have inserts on individual channels, busesand the devotee fader.

What is a Pan Pot?

Easy! A pan pot, is a tiny knob marked ‘pan’… Ok, you’ll want to know what it is for – it is a panoramic potentiometer and it allows you to place the signal it applies to (see ‘channel’) in any place in the stereo field, from greatest left to greatest right, and all stops in between. It helps you isolate the sounds in the mix – very handy when you find yourself with flute, sax and harmonica playing guests.

What are the Mute/Solo buttons for?

The mute button silencesthe audio on a channel (so you can hear other stuff in the mix, from other channels). A solo button silences everything exceptthe signal on a channel so you can hear that channel in isolation. Our (un)sound engineer has been known to mute a channel not currently being used (lest someone inadvertently wreck his mix by coughing on a live mic or smacking a guitar into a mic stand. It’s reasonable, but not when he goes off in quest of more beer and the next song up requires that channel… Be warned.

What are Routing Buttons?

Routing Buttons switch the audio signal down the pathway to the buses. Think of them as an output selector. If you press the ’3-4′ routing buttonand pan it (rotate it) all the way to the left / counter clockwise, the signal goes out by bus out 3. If you press the ’1-2′ routing button and pan it all the way right / clockwise, the signal only goes out bus 2. If you press 1-2, 3-4, and L-R and pan to the town point, the signal goes out straight through all 6 outputs. I propose you try all these options just to know what the results are – we had our desk for 6 months before we realised how beneficial this could be.

What’s a Send – and a Return?

A send is a major audio path that goes out of the mixer. There is, usually, a knob on each channel for each send so you can direct variable amounts of that channel to the pathway. These knobs send a variable amount, a tiny or a lot of each channel to a single mono output. A send can function as a isolate monitor mix and is used forstage monitors. In a recording situation, the send typically goes to an Fx unit. The signal is brought back to the mixerby the returns, and can be added to the main signal. A send is effectively a sub-mix. You don’t have to bring back the sends to their returns. You can bring them back to an empty channel and continue to process with Eq, or on to a bus fader. You can use the returns like any other line input, patching in synths, other mixers, computer sound-cards, a Cd player, decks and whatever else you can think of.

Yes! Use the buses (now you know what they are) to get an isolated signal to your Daw, sound card, or audio interface. They all work the same way. Or use the inserts to join together to the Daw with unbalanced cables (see below and also your mixer hand-operated will illustrate these). Shut off the global Eq. Unbalanced

The two signals of an unbalanced relationship are referred to as “signal” and “ground”. The ground is the zero reference while the signal has a voltage level that is above or below zero. This voltage level determines either the signal is a 1 or a 0 (Vga, Audio & Video are Analog signals, the analog signal can have a voltage level in any place in the middle of the high and low voltage levels). Balanced signals are often called “current loop” signals and tour on “twisted pairs” (Utp for Unshielded

Twisted Pair or Stp for Shielded Twisted Pair). The two signals in a balanced pair are like opposite charges of each other. What that means is if one wire has 12 volts, the other wire will have -12 volts. As the signal travels the pair, one wire radiates a magnetic field but as its partner wire generates an opposite field, the two fields cancel out. This cancelling is how balanced signals eliminate ‘cross-talk’. Since Twisted pair wire is usually economy then Coax wire, balanced signals are more popular. Make sure that you have the acceptable cables and all the time have back-up. As with so many things in your live set-up, the cheap buy often turns out to be the most high-priced over a period of time but a misplaced boot can speedily kill the best shielded cable.

Place a small piece of it next to the photograph of the gift or the person who so generously gave it to you, or with a journaling piece talking about why it is so special. Use It To Wrap someone else Gift!

Well… Not in the same way of course… The scrap is probably too small. But try this… Find a small gift box (either at home or at a local craft store) and decorate it! Depending on the size of the scrap you could adorn the box in two ways: (1) cut a piece to cover the box top and a strip to wrap around the sides; or (2) tear lots of small pieces and make a collage on only the top. Either way, you’ll have a beautiful new box that will be a lovely way to deliver your special gift!

Everyone needs a journal or a diary… Either it’s to article your personal feelings, or to document prominent data or events. In any case, using a boring aggregate book or a note pad just won’t do when you have beautiful wrapping paper scraps available! If you have a large piece of paper, cut pieces to cover both the front and back of the book. If you have only a smaller piece, trim it and cover the front of the book. And if you have only small pieces, make a collage! To make it even prettier, add a piece of ribbon, or embellishments like a felt flower or metal tag… whatever you have in your craft supplies drawer. I concept it would be fun to put together a list of the top 10 technology gadgets I would like for Christmas. When viewing this list, keep a join of things in mind. For starters, I already have a bunch of cool technology gadgets like TiVo and a Flip video camera so this list isn’t necessarily what I think are the top 10 technology gifts this holiday season. Rather, it’s a list of the gadgets I would like to have that I don’t already have.

Also, I’m not surely this material of a man or at least I try not to be. Love and happiness for my house would top my real Christmas list. But I concept some of my readers might get a kick out of seeing what a techie like me would put on his technology machine Christmas list. So, without supplementary ado, here is my list.

10. Blu-ray Dvd player – I’m not 100% sold on Blu-ray or even convinced it is going to survive but I think it would be fun to watch some of my beloved performance movies in full 1080p resolution.

9. Slingbox Pro-Hd – I’ve help other habitancy set up a Slingbox but I’d love to have one of my own so I could watch my TiVo recordings anywhere.

8. Kindle – The Kindle would be closer to the top of the list if it just looked cooler. I still say Amazon should have let Apple make the Kindle. Either way, I’d like to get my hands on one just to try it out.

7. Iphone 3G – I was an early adopter of the traditional iPhone buying it the day it was released. Now all of my friends have the new cool 3G one.

6. MacBook Pro – Apple makes some splendid seeing laptops and this one is no exception. Too bad they cost so much.

5. Apple Tv – High definition movie rentals downloaded right to my television. Awesome.

4. Flat panel television with full 1080p resolution – Again, I was an early adopter and at the time, full 1080p resolution wasn’t ready in the screen size I wanted. Now it is.

3. Digital picture frame – Oddly enough, I don’t have one of these. Just never got around to getting one.

2. Rock Band for the Wii – I played this at my sister’s house over Thanksgiving and instantly fell in love. And my singing voice could use a wee practice.

1. Digital Slr – I’m ready to make the leap to a digital Slr. Once you’ve seen the pictures these cameras take you may never want someone else point-and-shoot again.

Menus for Day 26! Some teachers may have heard of using menus in the classroom. While using bistro menus also works great for many activities, that is not the type of menu to which I am referring. These menus are basically a list of differentiated activities that can be chosen by students to complete.

I am currently using a spelling menu, as well as a vocabulary menu in my classroom for instruction and/or homework. My menus are split into distinct point level subcategories. There are categories for 5, 10, and 20 points. Under each subcategory, I have several assignment options listed. The directions state how many points must be completed within the time frame allotted. Basically when I give the spelling menu as a homework choice on Monday, students are foreseen, to turn in 25 completed points by Friday.
